A Snowfall Warning has been issued for many parts of southern Alberta.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), heavy snow is expected to intensify Wednesday night.

This heavy snowfall is expected to continue through Thursday for parts of central and southern Alberta, with total amounts of 15 to 30 cm.

Higher amounts, however, are most likely over the Hwy 9 corridor between Calgary and Coronation where upwards of 40 cm is possible.

ECCC says poor visibility due to blowing snow is also possible in some areas Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, particularly east of Hwy 2 and toward the Saskatchewan border. Snow is expected to end Thursday evening.

Officials say travel will likely be challenging and roads and walkways difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Also, visibility will likely be reduced at times and road closures are possible.

Motorists are reminded to allow extra time for travel. If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance.

In addition, take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow.
