Lethbridge County issues statement on Land Use Bylaw enforcement and staff safety

Apr 24, 2026 | 1:44 PM

Officials with Lethbridge County say they are aware of recent public commentary regarding a warning letter issued under the county’s Land Use Bylaw related to signage on a rural property.

To be clear, the county notes it does not regulate viewpoints or political beliefs. County officials say the Land Use Bylaw governs the placement, size, and type of signage to ensure consistency, safety, and compatibility with surrounding land uses across all properties in the county. Officials say these rules apply equally, regardless of the message displayed.

In this case, county officials say the warning letter was issued based on non-compliance with those established regulations. They add, it is part of routine enforcement carried out in communities across Alberta every day.

The county’s statement reads, “We recognize and respect that freedom of expression is a fundamental value in Canada. At the same time, the law is clear that municipalities may set reasonable, content-neutral rules respecting how and where signage is displayed.”

“We are concerned by reports that this matter has led to repeated threats of violence directed at Lethbridge County employees,” the statement continues. “Threats or harassment of any kind are unacceptable. The safety and well-being of our staff is a priority for us, and we are taking appropriate steps to support them. The matter has been referred to law enforcement for action.”

Out of an abundance of caution, the county says it is suspending drop in/walk in service at their offices for planning & development matters for the foreseeable future.

Officials note, the Planning and Development team remains available to assist with development permits, subdivisions and other inquiries by appointment only. Please call (403) 328-5525 or email development@lethcounty.ca to book an appointment.

Lethbridge County says it remains committed to fair, consistent, and respectful administration of its bylaws. The coutny encourages residents to engage constructively and to raise questions or concerns through appropriate channels.
