Parents encouraged to check records during National Immunization Awareness Week

Apr 28, 2026 | 8:58 PM

Primary Care Alberta is encouraging parents this week to learn more about childhood immunization.

That is because it is National Immunization Awareness Week.

For one, parents are encouraged to confirm that their children are up to date on their routine childhood shots.

“Choosing to follow the recommended routine immunization schedule gives your child more protection because they get vaccines at the most effective ages and stages. This builds immunity that lasts,” Primary Care Alberta says in a release.

“Vaccine-preventable diseases, like measles can be very dangerous, sometimes leading to serious, lifelong impacts. Measles cases and outbreaks continue to be identified throughout Alberta and this has led to many people becoming ill.”

According to the Government of Alberta, there have been a total of 297 confirmed cases of measles reported in 2026. Currently, there are two cases still considered communicable or active.
