Winds, lack of moisture also behind decision

Warmer weather prompts Newell County to issue fire restrictions

May 7, 2026 | 12:08 PM

The County of Newell has issued a set of new fire restrictions.

The restriction covers family style fireworks, exploding targets, burning barrels, charcoal briquettes, sky lanterns, and incinerators.

However, for now, approved gas and propane cooking appliances, portable propane fire pits, recreational fire pits, contained campfires, and wood pellet smokers, are still allowed.

The County adds the fire restriction does not cover the City of Brooks, Town of Bassano, Village of Duchess, Village of Rosemary, provincial parks, or First Nations Reserves.

A lack of sufficient moisture levels, rising temperatures, and gusty winds, prompted the decision.

As a result, the County will also not be issuing any new fire permits.

Restrictions will remain in place until further notice.
