Excite Lethbridge’s Paul Kingsmith receives honourary Blackfoot name

The Director of Event Development at Excite Lethbridge has been honoured with an Indigenous name by the Blackfoot Confederacy.

Recognized at Wednesday’s Whoop-Up Days community launch by Kirby Smith and Leonard Weasel Traveller for his long-standing working relationship with local elders and leaders, Paul Kingsmith, was given the name “Handsome Otter.”

“It means so much and it means so much to be on Blackfoot Territory and to be invited into the community, to get a name, to get that kind of honour…it’s really tough to comprehend,” said a still-emotional Kingsmith some 30 minutes after receiving the distinction.

“I am going to try to live up to the honour that comes with it, to get it from people I respect so much.”
