Cycling Canada won’t pursue 2028 Olympics with women’s track pursuit team

May 12, 2026 | 10:19 AM

Cycling Canada has applied the brakes to its elite women’s track pursuit team.

Cycling Canada will not enter a women’s pursuit team at track cycling’s world championship in October, even though Canada has qualified for the event, nor will it pursue qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Cycling Canada will enter a men’s pursuit team at the world championship and attempt Olympic qualification in the men’s event.

Canada is currently ranked ninth in the world in women’s pursuit and 10th in men’s pursuit.

Cycling Canada’s chief executive officer says the men are showing signs they’ll be more competitive in the event than the women.

Cyclist Fiona Majendie says it’s unfair to deny the women the chance to improve in time for 2028.
