City sees first draft of new economic development strategy

Deloitte Canada is putting together an economic development strategy for the City of Lethbridge.

A draft document, presented at a Community Issues Committee meeting yesterday, follows discussion by the steering group with key employers and stakeholders in the city.

However, Councillor Belinda Crowson, while thankful with what’s been accomplished so far, also made the appeal that it be done right.

“This is something we must have,” Crowson stipulated.

“It is actually unfathomable that we are creating now the first economic development strategy that anybody remembers us having,” she added. “It is something we need to have to work with our partners, to work with all the different departments and to make sure we move ahead in a very coordinated, strategic manner.

Among the groups being consulted in the process are the Blackfoot Confederacy and Metis Nation, the University of Lethbridge, Tourism Lethbridge, Excite Lethbridge, and Economic Development Lethbridge.

Another update to City Council is expected by year’s end.
