Police can be contacted on weekends: City manager

Question arises at Community Issues Committee over weekend encampment calls

An encampment response and outreach team set up through the City of Lethbridge continues its work with the community’s unhoused.

Based on funding, it’s limited in its reach, especially on weekends, where the need might be greater.

During a presentation to the Community Issues Committee on Tuesday, Community Social Development GM Andrew Malcolm was asked by mayor Blaine Hyggen if a resident or business had a concern or complaint on a Friday night, was there a quicker option than waiting until Monday.

“If there is a safety concern or life safety risk with either the individuals in the encampment, business, or a member of our community, that can be reported straight to police and the police will respond over the weekend,” Malcolm told the mayor.

“It’s just our team that is limited from the 8 to 5 Monday to Friday.”

A point-in-time count, done October 2nd of last year, identified 504 individuals as experiencing homelessness in Lethbridge with 233 of the 504 deemed in an unsheltered situation.
