The latest Alberta Crop Report from the Ministry of Agriculture & Irrigation shows below five and ten-year averages in seeding, except here in the South, where it’s slightly above.

Provincially, about 53-percent of seed is in the ground, down from the five-year average of 61% and 59%, when compared to the past ten years.

In Region 1, which covers Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Strathmore and Foremost, seeding for major crops is estimated at 80%, up from the five and ten averages of 75 and 76, respectively.

Soil conditions in the South are rated as 5% excellent, 44% good, and 33% fair, while tame hay conditions are, generally, favourable with a good grading for 66% of fields.

Surface and sub-surface moisture conditions are billed as good to excellent across Alberta, with the Northwest and Peace Country having the best numbers while the South is ranked second lowest among the six regions.

The next survey, the fourth weekly report of the year, will look at conditions on May 26th.
