Nikkel, John

We are sad to announce that Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa, JOHN NIKKEL, joined his wife, Anne Nikkel, in heaven on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at the age of 90 years.
There are many left to celebrate his memory and continue the Nikkel family name, including his sisters, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Although he was a man of minimal words, we all remember their custom nicknames and his chuckle that accompanied his teasing and witty remarks.
Dad was always a passionate farmer and loved to be in the field, on a tractor, or with his cattle. He often said, “I am a lucky guy – I have been able to do what I love my whole life.” And so he did until the very end. You could always find awards, ribbons, plaques, and paraphernalia throughout the house for his seed crops and prized bulls. He tried to balance out Mom’s Bible verse décor with his own pictures of cattle.
One of Dad’s favourite sports was starting a debate. The chances of winning against him were as good as winning the lottery! The more riled up his opponent became, the bigger his smile grew.
We admired his positive outlook through the hard times, even when his stubbornness won and he went right back to caring for his cattle and farm after multiple hospital stays. He was very appreciative of the care he received, especially his caregivers, who helped with his every need! Because of their support, he was able to stay on the farm, as was his wish.
John trusted in God through all the seasons of his life.
Until we meet again, we know he will be in his favourite chair watching hockey games and pestering Mom in heaven.
A Celebration of his life will be held at COALDALE MENNONITE BRETHREN CHURCH, 2114 – 18 Street, Coaldale, AB, on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Joe Martens officiating. The Celebration of life will be live-streamed and may be viewed through John’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alice Farm Sanctuary in Calgary, AB (www.thealicesanctuary.ca/donate), as he had expressed his desire to end animal abuse.
