City of Lethbridge reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert during Safe Kids Week

Jun 2, 2026 | 11:01 AM

June 1st through 7th is Safe Kids Week and the City of Lethbridge is reminding you and I that kids can move fast and be unpredictable, including on roadways.

That’s why they’re asking drivers to slow down, stay alert, and be ready, when behind the wheel.

Traffic Safety Engineer Muhammad Qasim says slowing down is one of the simplest ways drivers can help make sure kids get to where they are going safely.

A City transportation study done last year revealed that a total of 14 kids, ages four to 17, were injured in either a reported pedestrian or cyclist collision, with the afternoon hours being the busiest time for youth activity.

AMA childhood safety program manager Carrie Herrick-Fitzgerald adds that Safe Kids Week is an important reminder to drivers to look out for our most vulnerable road users.

The group, Parachute Canada, which is spearheading the national campaign, has also set up a dedicated webpage for the week.
