Cervids, other livestock, to move forward

CFIA backs down on proposed beef traceability requirements after industry backlash

New traceability requirements for beef cattle proposed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have been shelved.

The move followed a large influx of industry opposition with producers calling the new rules too burdensome.

Heather Brown, the CFIA’s national manager of humane transport and livestock traceability programs, says while beef and bison requirements won’t change, it will for pigs, goats, sheep and cervids, such as deer and elk.

However, the agency had said it will continue gathering feedback from other livestock groups before setting a new timeline to move the changes forward.
