Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a Special Weather Statement for parts of the MD of Willow Creek.

It said conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds this afternoon through this evening near Clareshold and Stavely.

“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,” the statement went on to say.

“This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”

Landspout tornadoes, it added, do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous., strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

It has also included the City of Calgary under a separate statement, but with the same potential for funnel clouds.

ECCC is urging those in the area to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
