Smith says not to panic every time Trump threatens new tariffs

Jun 15, 2026 | 1:55 PM

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the art of dealing with U-S President Donald Trump is to stop panicking every time a new tariff is threatened.

Smith says negotiators need to recognize that Trump, as a businessman, always has a plan A, B, and C up his sleeve.

She says he’ll ask for the moon but can settle for something less than that if it works for him.

The premier was speaking in Calgary at the New North America summit. Leaders at the summit are discussing a range of issues facing Canada, the U-S and Mexico.

Smith’s comments come as the trade agreement between Canada, the U-S and Mexico known as CUSMA, is back in the headlines.

That pact keeps most North American trade duty free, but Trump said recently he is not looking to renew it.
