Alberta RCMP reminds residents dangers of driving impaired ahead of Canada Day

Jun 29, 2026 | 12:17 PM

Alberta RCMP are reminding residents not to drive while impaired this Canada Day.

Mounties say that, on average in Canada, one in every four fatal collisions involves an impaired driver.

“However you choose to celebrate Canada Day, never operate a motorized vehicle, including boats and OHVs, if impaired from drugs or alcohol,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP traffic. “Everyone should be able to make it home safely this holiday. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911.

Before getting behind the wheel this Canada Day, the RCMP says motorists should remember:

  • Impaired driving is dangerous and criminal.
  • Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol impairs your judgment and reaction time.
  • Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS) is a tool used by Alberta RCMP to deter and detect impaired driving. Drivers who refuse to provide a breath sample can be criminally charged.
  • Individuals with a Graduated Driver’s Licence must abide by the zero-tolerance law.
  • Impaired driving is always preventable. Plan to have a safe ride home. Call a taxi or rideshare service, use a designated driver, or stay the night.
  • Impaired driving laws apply to all motorized vehicles, including boats and off-highway vehicles (OHV).
