"Safe celebrations save lives...it's that simple"

Long weekend or not, STARS Air Ambulance urges Albertans to be safe on Canada Day

Even though Canada Day falls on a Wednesday this year, STARS Air Ambulance is urging Albertans to be safe.

Provincial Operations Director Josh Nash says “safe celebrations save lives…it’s that simple.”

Even though Canada Day isn’t part of a long weekend, the emergency response organization says history shows otherwise.

Nash says Canadians still travel, head to cabins, lakes and highways, and spend time in places where emergency care may be farther away.

As always, he says, they’ll be ready if someone needs them, but he’s urging everyone to make an added effort to be safe when celebrating the country’s birthday.

STARS has provided a list of seven suggestions for a happy and safe Canada Day…

  1. Plan your route and let someone know your itinerary before heading to rural or remote areas
  2. Wear helmets and protective gear for motorcycles, ATVs, and cycling
  3. Never drive or operate equipment under the influence of alcohol or cannabis
  4. Always wear a Personal Flotation Device near or on the water, regardless of swimming ability
  5. Stay hydrated and take breaks in the heat
  6. Know the signs of a stroke or cardiac emergency and don’t delay calling 911
  7. In an emergency, call 911 first
