River flowing fast, unstable banks

City of Lethbridge warns residents to stay away from Oldman River

The City of Lethbridge is urging residents to keep their distance from the Oldman River.

In a statement Wednesday morning, the City said significant rainfall has, again, caused the river levels to rise quickly.

The latest reading provided has the river flowing at a rate of 900 cubic metres per second, which is even more than we saw in early June after late May’s big rainstorm.

“At this time, the river is extremely fast and dangerous and the banks are unstable,” the City warned.

“Do not go near the river’s edge.”

The City said it will continue to monitor the water and watewater treatment plant operations.

For now, it says, all systems remain stable.

Meantime, the Alberta Rivers forecast centre continued High Streamflow advisories on Wednesday morning for the Oldman River Basin, which covers the Oldman, St. Mary, Waterton and Belly rivers, as well as Pincher and Willow creeks.

The current weather model for the Lethbridge region is forecasting no precipitation through Tuesday of next week with temperatures expected to reach the mid to upper 20’s.
