B.C. motorcyclist gets six-month ban after doing wheelie in front of police

SQUAMISH — A motorcycle rider in British Columbia has lost his licence for six months and received more than $2,800 in fines and penalties after performing a wheelie in front of a patrolling officer.

The BC Highway Patrol says in a release that the motorcycle rider was spotted by an officer on the Sea to Sky Highway near Furry Creek between Metro Vancouver and Squamish last Saturday.

Police say the rider was travelling at 146 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone, and the motorcycle was missing its mirrors as required by law.

A video shows a police motorcyclist approach before the rider does a wheelie and speeds away, weaving through traffic.

The 20-year-old Richmond man eventually pulls over, and the Highway Patrol says he was co-operative, noting he wasn’t fleeing the scene since he didn’t see the officer or didn’t realize he was being watched.

Police say the man had just finished a prior driving prohibition, and has now been handed a new six-month ban due to high-risk driving, as well as tickets for speeding and stunting.

The Highway Patrol says the man has also been issued at least three years of high-risk driver insurance premiums and a seven-day vehicle impound, all of which adds up to a combined cost of more than $2,800.
