Inreased fire risk with winds, heat

Fire Restriction put in place for County of Newell effective immediately

Aug 4, 2026 | 2:08 PM

Citing several reasons, including a lack of moisture and temperatures contributing to the fire risk, the County of Newell issued a Fire Restriction Tuesday.

In a social media post, the County added that forecasted wind speeds could, at times, exceed safe burning conditions.

Under the new rules, burning barrels, sky lanterns, and incinerators are not allowed; as are, exploding targets and charcoal briquettes.

“County of Newell Fire guardians will now refuse to issue new fire permits, until the Fire Restriction is lifted, and any permits are hereby cancelled,” said the posting by regional fire chief Stewart Luchies.

Of the fires that are allowed: approved gas or propane cooking appliances, portable propane fire pits, recreational fire pits, fully contained wood pellet smokers, and campfires at campgrounds where a fire containment unit is used.

The fire restriction will stay in effect until further notice.
