Lieutenant Governor inspired by athletes, community at Medicine Hat Special Olympics Games

“As the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, I’d like to say a huge thank you and congratulations to all the people of Medicine Hat who were involved in organizing and putting these games together.”

Lakhani says the volunteers have played a major role in making the Games a success.

She says most of the volunteers she’s met have been from Medicine Hat, adding that the community spirit has stood out to her.

“I think the community spirit here in Medicine Hat is just amazing,” she said.

“And I think that happens a lot in smaller communities, where you all come together, you all take onus, you all take responsibility that these games are in your city, and you want to all do the best you can to make it a truly, truly memorable time for everyone who’s here.”

Lakhani has attended several sporting events during her visit and says she’s been inspired by the athletes.

She describes Special Olympics athletes as determined people who have overcome challenges to reach the Games.

“They are here to have fun, to enjoy themselves, to build new connections, and to showcase their talents, and that is so nice to see,” she said.

“Whether they win or lose, as I said in my speech, in my eyes, they’re all winners, because they’ve made it this far.”

Lakhani also says the athletes’ participation highlights the importance of creating opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to reach their full potential.

“For every athlete who is here, there are many, many others like them with special needs whom we need to reach out to so they too can reach their fullest potential,” she said.

“But these athletes are a true inspiration to all of us.”

Lakhani also reflected on the Opening Ceremony, where she delivered a speech, and where athletes, volunteers and spectators sang O Canada together.

She said the moment demonstrated the strength of Canadians coming together.

“When we sing O Canada together, we know that we are better and stronger as one country,” she said.

Lakhani said the line “we stand on guard for thee” represents more than protecting Canada’s borders.

“We are not going to go to the border of Alberta and be standing guard there, but we are standing on guard for our Canadian values,” she said.

She described those values as supporting one another and ensuring Canadians have opportunities to develop their potential and succeed.

The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games continue in Medicine Hat through Saturday.
