Record participation during parkrun Canada’s 10th anniversary celebrations

Officials with parkrun Canada say this year’s event set a national participation record on Aug. 22, during its 10-year anniversary celebrations.

Organizers note parkrun started in Lethbridge seven years ago, and has held 317 events during that time.

What is parkrun? parkrun is a free, community-led 5K event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or spectate. It is not a race; there are no winners and no time limits. The goal is simply to get the community moving together in one of the city’s beautiful green spaces.

Officials note, parkrun is more than just a 5K; it is a community-led health initiative. In a time when social isolation is a growing concern, the event provides a consistent, weekly opportunity for social connection.

By removing the barriers to entry—making it free, timed and welcoming to walkers—officials say parkrun engages those who might otherwise feel excluded from traditional ‘athletic’ spaces.

Organizers highllight there are more than 60 parkruns across Canada, and almost half a million people participate in parkruns around the world each week.
