Cooler temperatures, calmer winds forecast, but Fire Danger remains at Extreme

After a full week with no rain and combined with strong wind gusts in recent days, the fire danger for much of southern Alberta has climbed back up to an Extreme classification.

And, the long-term weather forecast, it seems, isn’t showing any indication that conditions will improve over the next week, either.

A daily coloured map, which the Province releases during the fire season, showed much of the south in red Friday afternoon, with the remainder in brown – a High designation in risk.

In contrast, a large section of west-central Alberta and the northwest were in blue or Low.

Under an Extreme designation, forest fuels, and that includes grasslands in our area, are extremely dry and pose a very serious fire risk.

While the far southeast corner and Medicine Hat region could see the most amount of precipitation before the weekend ends, albeit limited, a system making its way up from Montana will bring with it some instability and the potential for thunderstorms.

There is, however, a silver lining in the forecast with temperatures expected to drop considerably into the 20s on Sunday and winds gusts near 20 km/h, compared to the near 70 km/h readings parts of the region witnessed on Wednesday and Thursday.
