Police in Lethbridge have charged a 34-year-old man with assaulting an officer and evading arrest following an incident Friday.

LPS say it began at a home on Mohawk Road after a report of a man, known to police, and wanted on outstanding warrants, had reportedly stolen a safe.

The occupants of the home telling police they believed the person was still inside the home and had a firearm.

Upon investigating, police found the individual had left and was, in fact, renting a hotel room in the 1000-block of Mayor Magrath Drive.

Located in the hotel’s lobby, he resisted efforts to arrest him, assaulted an officer, and then fled the scene on foot.

After several hours of searching, the suspect was discovered hiding in a tree at the Henderson Lake Golf Course and was arrested without incident.

He was remanded in custody and scheduled to appear in court today.
