Lethbridge high school teacher chosen for Prime Minister’s Award

An educator from the Bridge City has been recognized on the national stage.

Lethbridge Collegiate Institute teacher Cilena Mathieu has been chosen for a Certificate of Excellence in this year’s Prime Minister’s Awards.

Mathieu is one of 60 teachers from across the country given the honour this year and one of 221 nominations considered.

Mathieu teaches students in grades 9 through 12 in the subjects of Science, Physics, Space Exploration and Astronomy.

The high school instructor is being recognized for involvement in the STEM program, which combines Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, using real world applications.

In a biographical write-up, it said Mathieu creates powerful learning experiences that extend far beyond the classroom. She has led the development of innovative programs in space exploration and astronomy. These give students the chance to explore science at national and international levels.

“Under her guidance, students confidently collaborate, present their work publicly, and articulate the scientific and engineering principles behind their projects. The culture she cultivates is one where students feel both challenged and championed,” added fromer LCI principal Annette Fox-BruisedHead.

“Education is one of the most powerful forces for transforming our country and shaping our shared future,” said Prime Minister Mark Carney in a prepared statement.

“Teachers are at the heart of that work, helping the next generation to learn, to lead and to build a stronger Canada. I congratulate the 2026 award recipients and thank all educators for their dedication, their service and their contributions to Canada.”

Since its creation in 1994, close to 2,300 educators have been recognized for their teaching excellence.
