10-cent-per-litre surcharge to return in 2027

Canadian Taxpayers Federation behind push for elimination of federal excise tax

A report released yesterday by the Parliamentary Budget Office has caught the attention of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

With fuel and diesel prices at record levels, the CTF says the study clearly shows Canadians need relief at the pumps.

The findings estimate the average family will save up to $486 from the time the federal excise tax was paused in April until it returns January 31, 2027.

“Everytime you’re filling up a family minivan, that’s saving you $7.50 each time,” Taxpayers Federation lberta director Kris Sims emphasizes.

“That’s a jug of milk. If you fill up your minivan every week, between now and the end of the year, that’s going to save you more than $135.”

The federation recently advocated to a House of Commons finance committee to have the federal excise tax eliminated for good.

The federal government has said it plans to reinstate the 13-cents-per-litre levy Jan. 31, 2027.
