Montreal Canadiens recall defenceman David Reinbacher from AHL

Oct 14, 2026 | 8:23 AM

WASHINGTON — The Montreal Canadiens recalled defenceman David Reinbacher from the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket on Wednesday as a precaution ahead of their game against the Washington Capitals.

The move comes after veteran blueliner Mike Matheson suffered a lower-body injury in Saturday’s meeting with the Detroit Red Wings.

Matheson missed Tuesday’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres and is listed as day-to-day.

Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis said Reinbacher — selected fifth overall by Montreal in the 2023 NHL draft — will not be in the lineup against Washington.

The 21-year-old Austrian, who has two assists in four games with Laval in 2026-27, made his NHL debut in April and appeared in two games with the Canadiens last season.

St. Louis also confirmed that goaltender Jakub Dobes will start against the Capitals.

Montreal visits Washington looking for its third straight win.
