The University of Lethbridge is recognizing their first Rhodes Scholar with an honorary degree.

Dr. Cheryl Misak will be celebrated at the Fall 2026 convocation in honour of her contributions to the world of philosophy and her work as vice-president and provost of the University of Toronto.

“It’s fitting to be granting an honorary degree to one of our most distinguished alumna who embraced liberal education during her time as a ULethbridge student and has embodied those ideals throughout her professional career,” says ULethbridge Chancellor Terry Whitehead (BA ’94), who will be presiding over the final convocation ceremony of his four-year term.

Dr. Misak graduated from ULethbridge in 1983 with a BA in philosophy after originally attending to become a lawyer.

She graduated with distinction with the Faculty of Arts & Science Gold medal and later applied for and was accepted as a Rhodes Scholar.

After holding teaching positions at Oxford and Queen’s University, Miska joined the University of Toronto and quickly rose up the ranks to become chair of the philosophy department, dean of the Mississauga Campus, and later vice-president and provost.

As a philosopher, Misak has numerous publications and eight books under her name and is considered an expert in pragmatism, with interest in the history of analytical philosophy, the philosophy of medicine, political philosophy, and ethics.

Misak will be recognized during the convocations Saturday Oct. 17, at 10:00 a.m. in the Co-op centre for Sports and Wellness Gymnasium.
