Province prepares for respiratory, flu season with added beds

Oct 26, 2026 | 12:50 PM

The Alberta government says it’s preparing itself for the upcoming flu and respiratory seasons by adding more resources.

In an announcement Saturday, it said that includes the addition of some 220 permanent hospital beds across the province.

Assisted Living minister and Lethbridge East MLA Nathan Neudorf says a further 3500 continuing care spaces are being added or modernized.

“During respiratory virus season, every hospital bed matters. By strengthening care within our communities, we are helping Albertans receive the support they need and ensuring our hospitals can care for those who need them the most.”

In April, the Province announced it was adding 1100 new continuing care spaces through a $400 million infusion.

In relation, Neudorf says his government’s efforts with Acute Care Alberta have managed to ‘free up’ the equivalent of 175 hospital beds in the last year.
