Lethbridge sports council-led committee looks to bid on 2028 Alberta Winter Games

A bid for the Alberta 2028 Winter Games to be held in Lethbridge is one step closer to becoming reality.

In a presentation Tuesday, the city’s Sport Council asked the Community Issues Committee for a letter of support and a commitment for partial funding.

Sport Council executive director Susan Eyemann says the games will be an economic generator for the city, but also provide something else.

“For many athletes, the games will be one of the first experiences competing at a provincial multi-sport event,” said in their presentation.

“It is an opportunity to represent the region, develop confidence, and be inspired to continue in sport.”

If approved by the Province, the Games Bid Committee is asking the City for a $525,000 contribution towards its $1.6 million projected budget.

While receiving unanimous approval yesterday, a formal vote will take place at next Tuesday’s regular council meeting to make it all official.
