ATCO urges Albertans to be mindful of CO — ‘The Silent Killer’

Nov 4, 2026 | 11:29 AM

ATCO is reminding Albertans about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO), especially as the weather gets colder.

Nov. 1-7 is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, and it is a timely message this time of year as people turn on furnaces, fireplaces, and other fuel-burning appliances.

“Carbon monoxide is a silent and potentially deadly toxic gas, responsible for approximately 300 deaths in Canada each year and thousands of hospital visits,” said Leo Pisarevski, ATCO Gas Operator.

“ATCO responds to about 3,000 carbon monoxide-related incidents annually in Alberta, and our message remains the same: installing a CO alarm is one of the simplest and most effective steps you can take to protect yourself and your family. They’re affordable, easy to install, and they save lives.”

Signs and symptoms of CO poisoning include headaches and dizziness, nausea and vomiting, confusion, and shortness of breath.

Severe poisoning can be fatal, but ATCO notes that many of these incidents are preventable through regular maintenance of appliances, proper ventilation, and ensuring you have working carbon monoxide alarms.

Appliances may also include hot water heaters, dryers, ranges, gas and diesel vehicles, gas-powered machines like lawnmowers, and even wood-burning fireplaces.

Maintenance can include having your appliances checked by a qualified technician regularly, and installing and regularly testing your alarm(s).
