Heading into election year, Spearman says too soon to discuss intentions

LETHBRIDGE – 2017 is a municipal election year. But the incumbent mayor of Lethbridge isn’t prepared to tip his hand yet.

In a year-end conversation with Lethbridge News Now, Chris Spearman said it’s too early to discuss his intentions regarding a second term. Spearman was first elected in 2013.

“I think the most important thing is to get through some of the things we have to deal with as council together,” Spearman said. “The capital improvement process is one that we need to make sure that we’re dealing with issues, on an issue-by-issue basis and that we don’t politicize them. So we don’t want to start the election campaign before we have to.

“I think candidates would probably be wise to wait until July 1 before they announce their intentions.”

When asked whether he’s been thinking about it, Spearman remained non-committal.

“It’s been a great term to this point, and as long as I can continue to serve the citizens of Lethbridge well, certainly it’s something I will be taking seriously come July,” he said.

Lethbridge News Now will have more from our year-end interview with the mayor in the coming days.
