Speed Reduction slated for 2 Lethbridge County Locations

Sep 16, 2016 | 10:49 AM

LETHBRIDGE –  An initial request from a County subdivision has resulted in the lowering of the speed limit in two locations.

Effective September 30th, the speed limit will be reduced to 30-kmp/h on the secondary road leading to Vista Meadows (just south of secondary highway 512 or the Jail road) and in Shaughnessy.

Vista Meadows residents first contacted the County about the speed reduction due to safety concerns in the area.

The County surveyed all its communities, hamlets and subdivisions over the summer and found most were only slightly in favour having a speed reduction.

The matter was discussed at a Municipal Services Committee meeting and it was decided that speed reductions would be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Since the majority of residents in Vista Meadows and Shaughnessy were in favour of the reduction, Reeve Lorne Hickey says the County will go ahead with the lower speeds in those areas, as safety is extremely important.

“The reduced speed limits to 30 km/h in Shaughnessy and the Vista Meadows subdivision area were requested by the residents of these communities with a majority support and we are honouring their request.”

The County also noted that if residents of other  hamlets or subdivision want to have their speed limit reduced to 30 km/h, they need majority support of the residents in the community and will need to submit a formal request for a speed reduction to Lethbridge County Council.
