Lethbridge man pleads guilty to charges in relation to January RCMP cruiser ramming incident

LETHBRIDGE – A Lethbridge man, who was facing 13 charges relating to ramming an RCMP vehicle and a subsequent crime spree in Coaldale on Jan. 14 – will spend more than a year in jail, after pleading guilty to several offences in Lethbridge Provincial Court Tuesday, Feb. 26.

According to court records, 32-year-old Darrin Bressellar pleaded guilty to breach of probation and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, dangerous operation of a vehicle which garnered a one-year driving prohibition, two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, mischief, breach of recognizance and flight from a peace officer.

Charges of driving without insurance, displaying unauthorized license plates, driving while unauthorized, an additional breach of recognizance and resisting a peace officer were withdrawn.

Bressellar was sentenced to 540 days in jail as a global sentence, but was given credit for 66 days, meaning his sentence amounted to about 15-months.

Case History

The incident began in the early morning hours of Jan. 14, when a man was found passed out in a stolen truck in a farm yard near Coaldale, along Hwy 512. When police approached, they say the suspect woke up, rammed a police vehicle and then fled.

Later that same day, a suspicious vehicle was seen east of Coaldale. Police followed the vehicle to Stafford Lake where it was abandoned. Officers found the man hiding in the garage of an area residence.
