Another Alberta Party candidate suspended while party leader awaits court decision

EDMONTON —  The list of Alberta Party candidates banned for failing to file paperwork that detailed expenses and expenditures during the nomination process has grown.

Alberta’s deputy chief electoral officer confirmed the suspension of Tim Meech in the Livingstone-Macleod constituency.

Meech is among seven Alberta Party candidates who have been suspended, including Rachel Timmermans, Diana Ly, Moe Rahall, Ali Haymour, Amrit Matharu and Party leader Stephan Mandel. They were all fined $500 and faced five-year bans for late filing. However, Moe Rahall took his case to court and won Friday (Feb 22).  He is back on the campaign trail.

Alberta has had election regulations on the books for years which bans parties and candidates that don’t submit financial documents on time. However, while initiating a series of campaign-finance changes that banned corporate and union donations and set limits on third-party advertising, the NDP also extended financial reporting rules to riding nominations.

As Party leader, Mandel has called the new rules confusing and ‘draconian’. Even UCP leader Jason Kenney agrees.  Unfortunately, the NDP has offered no sympathy to the Alberta Party and has stated ‘rules-are-rules’.

Mandel was in an Edmonton court Friday afternoon to challenge his disqualification.  He argued that the deadline rules surrounding his nomination finances were unclear and that he missed the deadline because his chief financial officer was ill.

The judge reserved her decision in the case until next week and he will have to wait to learn whether he can run in the upcoming provincial election.

Meantime, Premier Rachel Notley can drop the writ at any time to officially begin the election campaign.
