Hurricanes sign import goaltender Schmid, and defenseman Palivko

LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced on Wednesday, July 25, that they have signed goaltender Akira Schmid and defenseman Danila Palivko to Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreements.

Schmid, 18, was selected by the Hurricanes 20th overall in the first round of the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft in June.

The product of Nesslau, Switzerland was also selected in the fifth round by the New Jersey Devils in the 2018 National Hockey League Entry Draft in June.

In 2017-2018, Schmid played 32 games with the Langnau Under-20 Elite Junior-A League in Switzerland where he posted a 2.60 goals against average. He also appeared in four games with the EHC Thun where he posted a 2.21 GAA while registering an impressive 1.96 GAA and a .930 save percentage at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Palivko, 16, was taken 80th overall by the Hurricanes in the second round in the Import Draft.

The product of Novopolotsk, Belarus will turn 17 on Nov. 30.

The 6’4”, 192-defenseman played the 2017-2018 season with Team Belarus’ Under-17 team. In 40 games, the rearguard registered 26 points (6g-20a) along with 28 penalty minutes.

Palivko also appeared at the 2017 Macs Tournament in Calgary with the Belarus U-17 team and registered two assists in four games.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are scheduled to begin training camp for the 2018-2019 season on Aug. 23 at the ENMAX Centre.
