LETHBRIDGE — A 30-year-old city man sentenced to eight-years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in January of 2011, is now facing a charge of aggravated assault in connection with a stabbing Monday (Dec 10) afternoon.

Police responded to the incident just after 12 p.m. in the roadway at the intersection of 3 Avenue and 12 Street South.

The initial investigation determined the 26-year-old male victim, a 30-year-old man and 27-year-old female acquaintance were involved in a physical altercation earlier in the day and had left the scene in separate vehicles.  However, a second incident erupted when the two vehicles were stopped at a red light.

The 26-year victim exited his vehicle and smashed the window of the other vehicle with a snow brush, which prompted the man and woman to get out and confront him. The victim attempted to strike the woman, but the 30-year-old man intervened and was hit across the back.  The accused stabbed the victim multiple times and left him on the road before fleeing with the woman in their vehicle.

A passenger inside the victim’s vehicle helped him inside and drove him to the Regional Hospital.

Police located the suspect at a home a short time later and he was arrested.  William Edward Fick is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He is currently in custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.

The victim remains in Chinook Regional Hospital in serious condition.

The investigation continues.  Police have already interviewed a number of witnesses but ask anyone who was in the area of 3 Avenue and 12 Street South at the time of the incident (around noon Dec. 10) to call 403-328-4444.

Fick’s 2011 conviction resulted from the 2009 stabbing death of 31-year old Timothy Laszynskyj.  Fick and Jason Thomas Wilson went to Laszynskyj’s home on Apri 15, 2009 to collect a drug debt.  The trio got into a fight and Fick stabbed Laszynskyj in the neck.

Originally charged with second-degreess murder, Fisk pleaded guilty to the reduced charged of manslaughter. Wilson also pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was given five-years in prison.
