VICTORIA – The first round of cuts have started for Team Canada’s World Junior Hockey Team, and Lethbridge Hurricanes defenceman Calen Addison is among them.

Team Canada cut Addison, along with fellow defencemen Cameron Crotty and forwards Raphael Lavoie and Ty Dellandrea after their 5-3 exhibition loss to the U Sports all-stars on Thursday, Dec. 13.

Addison, 18, has recorded 31 points (4G, 27A) this season with the Hurricanes. The 2018 second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins is eligible to play for Canada in 2020.

Speaking after the decision, Addison lamented it’s a tough one to swallow.

“But at the end of the day it’s part of the game and it’s happened to a lot of good players over the years,” he continued. “For me, it was just special to even be here and get invited as an 18-year-old.”

Addison is expected to rejoin the Hurricanes for their final two games before the holiday break.

Team Canada still has to release one goaltender, three defencemen and four forwards in order to get down to its official 22-man roster ahead of the tournament.
