STONY PLAIN, AB – The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) Provincial Wrestling Championships took place this weekend.

In Stony Plain, 13 Lethbridge wrestlers competed (14 had qualified, but one athlete was ruled out due to injury) and cam home with medals.

Callum Hyland, a grade 12 student from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI), earned gold in his final tournament for the team.

Fellow departing grade 12 student Maren Avanson (LCI) won silver. Other athletes who were competing in their last tournament included Aiden Arn, Kelsea Peterson and Kennedy Kreutz.

Chinook High grade 10 students Mason Harris and Brantley Saar won silver medals.

Angelina Ellis-Toddington, another Chinook High grade 10 student, won bronze. Her win was the first medal a female Chinook High wrestler won at a provincial championship.

The event also marked the 25th anniversary of ASAA’s introduction of a female category to wrestling.

The LCI women and men both took second place in the 3A school team division.

The high school season is now over. However, Lethbridge Wrestling has the Alberta Open Provincial Championships this weekend in Medicine Hat and will be sending a small group to the Canadian U17/U19 Wrestling Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick next month.
