LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College has joined the ranks of home renovation shows.

The six-episode web series ‘Flipped Out’ is a joint project by students in the school’s Digital Communications and Media (DCM) program and the Mortgage Centre.

“We actually thought it would be a great idea to do just this – to buy a home, flip it – but to make a show out of it so the thinking was that we needed somebody who had the technology and the know-how on how to film a show and we decided to approach Lethbridge College,” said Ryan Wolfe, a mortgage professional with the Mortgage Centre.

Wolfe will also serve as a co-host of the series alongside DCM graduate Stephanie Savage.

He said proceeds from the sale of the home will go back to the school and its students.

“My understanding is that some of the kids will get individual awards, they’ll vote as to which students did the best job in their portion of the project and then there will be some leftover funds as well to go to the project in general,” Wolfe explained.

He said he originally came up with the idea but stressed that the whole process has been a team effort.

“It has just been too big of a project just for one person to do. It’s been a lot of fun and I’m very impressed with the college, the professionalism of the students and the staff and we’ve had great support from the community. Different companies have pitched in to make this project come around.”

The Mortgage Centre has been in possession of the home since September 2018. Filming and construction began in October.

In all, the whole project has been ongoing for about eight to nine months.

Wolfe said episodes will be five to six minutes long, and the series will be comprised of six episodes.

“We’ve seen an unedited version of the first five episodes, and they look really good,” he said.

The reveal of the home and the renovations has been filmed, and Wolfe said they’re hoping to release the web series in early April.

According to Wolfe, there has been a lot of interest so far for the property, and the home been assessed at $340,000 to $360,000.

“We’re in an excellent location, in a speed zone, across from a park, with a big lot and huge garage. They’ve done a really good job on the renovation, so the value’s there I think,” he said.

As for a season two of ‘Flipped Out’, Wolfe said discussions are underway for a sophomore season.

“There’s an appetite to have a season two. I think (Lethbridge College) is happy with the experience for their students – they have found a benefit for their students to do this,” Wolfe said.

“We’re in the talks. I don’t know that we’ve inked it yet, but we are definitely looking for ways to get it done.”

Reactions from students is that the process has been unique. Wolfe said the project has given students real-world experience in filming a show.

“I think for them, they’ve really appreciated this kind of somewhat chaotic, uncontrollable atmosphere to shoot in, to edit and our feedback from the students has been universally very positive.”

Students filmed the whole process while other crews took care of the construction aspect.

“Community ventures like this, they take a lot of people to help out and come together. That’s what’s great about Lethbridge is that we’ve had so much help,” Wolfe said.

Episodes will be released online on YouTube, through Lethbridge College and the Mortgage Centre websites and via an official site for the show.

“We encourage people to watch because if we want to keep doing projects like this, people have to see value in it, our trades need to see value in it, our sponsors need to see value in it. Enjoy it, it won’t take a lot of your time, you’ll see lots of interesting things and have some fun along the way.”
