Alberta votes: 2019 election guide

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Note: this guide will be updated as more information becomes available.

Voters will head to the polls on April 16, 2019.

In preparation for the provincial election, public forums will be held for constituents in local ridings to hear from candidates.

LETHBRIDGE-EAST AND LETHBRIDGE-WEST

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27 FROM 6:30 TO 9:00 P.M. – Lethbridge-East all candidates’ forum presented by the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs at the Royal Canadian Legion.

FRIDAY, MARCH 29 FROM 6:30 TO 9:00 P.M.  – Lethbridge-West forum presented by the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs at the Lethbridge Senior Centre Gymnasium.

TUESDAY, APRIL 2 FROM 6:30 TO 8:30 P.M. – Lethbridge-East candidates at Lethbridge Public Library (downtown location).

TUESDAY, APRIL 2 FROM 6:30 TO 8:30 P.M. – Lethbridge-West forum at Chinook High School, presented by Lethbridge School District 51/Holy Spirit Catholic School Division/Lethbridge Public ATA Local No. 41/Holy Spirit ATA Local No. 5.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9 FROM 5:00 TO 7:00 P.M. – The Family Centre Downtown has invited all candidates in the ridings of Lethbridge-West and Lethbridge-East to a forum. City of Lethbridge Councillor Mark Campbell will facilitate the event.

LIVINGSTONE-MACLEOD

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3 AT 6:30 P.M. (DOORS OPEN) – All candidates’ forum at the Nanton Community Centre, presented by the Nanton, Claresholm and High River Chambers of Commerce.

*Additional forum information will be added to this report for all ridings, including those above as well as Taber-Warner and Cardston-Siksika when that becomes available.

WHERE, WHEN AND HOW TO VOTE?

General voting day in the 2019 provincial election takes place on Tuesday, April 16. However, registered voters can cast their ballot early as part of advanced polling days.

Advance polls will be available:

  • Tuesday, April 9
  • Wednesday, April 10
  • Thursday, April 11
  • Friday, April 12
  • Saturday, April 13

Voter information centres are open from 8:15 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekends and 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on voting days.

Questions can also be called in toll-free at 1-877-422-8683.

In order to cast a ballot, a voter must be:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years of age on Election Day
  • Ordinarily a resident in Alberta

Voters must also be registered to vote, which can be done online through Elections Alberta’s website. Registration can also be completed in-person at the advanced polls and during general voting day. Voters must provide authorized identification if going that route.

Electors must provide a valid driver’s license number or Alberta Identification Card number. If you cannot provide a piece of government issued ID, you must provide two pieces of authorized ID. Both must have your name and one must have your current address.

Forms are available to fill out for people that fall under the following categories:

  • Elector on Colony
  • Elector on Reserve or Settlement
  • Homeless Elector
  • Student Elector
  • Tenant Elector

Those forms can be found through Elections Alberta’s website.

Special ballots are also available for those who cannot visit a polling station during the advance polling period or on general election day. However, those wishing to cast a special ballot must meet the following criteria:

  • Physically incapacitated
  • Away from your electoral division
  • An inmate
  • An election officer, candidate, official agent or scrutineer
  • Living in a remote area, as defined in the Election Act

Special ballot requests can be found through Elections Alberta’s website.

Requests for a Special Ballot to be mailed out or picked up by a designated person can only be made until Monday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m.

In-person requests for a Special Ballot can be made at the Returning Office in voters’ electoral division until the close of the polls on Election Day.

Elections Alberta states that requests can be made by fax or email, the ballot itself cannot be sent electronically. To complete a Special Ballot properly, electors must include a copy of their identification, review and sign the certificate envelope and return the ballot on time.

Ballots returned late are rejected and will not be counted.

In addition, anyone who is away from their home riding but still living in Alberta will be able to cast a ballot for their home riding from any polling station during the advanced polling period.
