PETRE BALUTIS passed away peacefully in Lethbridge on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the age of 93. Petre was born at Boblaukas Kaima, Lithuania on February 24, 1925 to Jonas Masaitis and Antanine (Priespilis).
She is survived by her children Irene Balutis (Hubert Birkner) and David Balutis (Brenda), her grandchildren Kelsey Balutis (Mel) and Andrea Balutis, and by her brother Jones Masaitis (Dagmar).
Petre was predeceased by her husband Peter and by her sister Eugenija (Titas Uogintas).
At the age of 19, Petre was the first of her family to emigrate after the war. She arrived in Edmonton knowing little English to become a nanny to two young Canadian girls. She loved Edmonton, her family, the Lithuanian community (that included both the Catholic Church and great dance parties) and singing in Lithuanian choirs. She was a great neighbour and shared her bountiful garden crops with everyone.
She was terribly proud of her granddaughters and was sad to leave Edmonton. She spent her family years in Lethbridge helping Irene in the backyard.
A special thank-you to the wonderful people at Martha’s House for their many years of kindness to our Mom and to Dr. Garland Jonker for his love and care.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church in Edmonton at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Alzheimer Society, #308, 14925 – 111 Avenue N.W., Edmonton, Alberta T5M 2P6.
