Dad, My Mr. Wonderful
(poem written by his son Rob)
Dad’s life started out by spending most of his youth in foster care.
Never knowing how long he would be able to stay anywhere.
He always talked highly of everyone who looked after him.
It was like they had always filled his life up to the brim.
He spent most of his younger years looking for a way to belong.
Eventually though, the right partner for him came along.
Someone to love and share experiences with over the years.
An opportunity to share their deepest secrets and private fears.
Then a short time later came perfection all wrapped in blue.
And of course, eventually, along would come those other two.
We got to experience a life filled with humour and fun.
And because of his childhood we knew we were loved a ton.
He told us he didn’t fit in and always claimed to be very shy.
But we always saw him make people laugh so hard they’d cry.
He would come up with ideas when we went on trips.
Like having a conversation without moving our lips.
Our Dad’s thoughts always had their own unique version.
Like teaching his grandchildren their first word should be excursion.
He would struggle with trying to remember everyone’s name.
So to help others with his, “Mr Wonderful”, he became.
He changed his name because most would struggle with it.
They seemed to say “Bob” backwards, it happened quite a bit.
Dad’s thoughts can be easily summarized for all of you.
Enjoy life by making others laugh with the fun things you do.
Unfortunately, the time comes to let someone special go.
But at least I got the chance to teach him everything I know.
So be like our Dad and go show each other how much you care.
It’s easy, just start talking about a bar in Billings and a bear.
