DOREEN BERGEN (née McDonald), beloved wife of the late Melvin Bergen, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at St. Therese Villa, on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the age of 89 years.
Doreen is lovingly remembered as “Granny” and will be forever cherished by her children: John (Irene) McColl, Rae (Judy) McColl, Jackie (Allan) Walkey and Micky (Cindy) McColl and her stepchildren Ken Bergen and Sheila Armstrong.
Doreen was infamous for her fiery personality, her boisterous singing, her fondness for dogs and horses and her love and devotion to her children, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Besides her husband Mel, she was predeceased by her parents and brother Jack.
Doreen was born to John and Elizabeth McDonald on April 19, 1930. She attended school in Lethbridge and graduated from Paramount Beauty Culture Academy in 1948 to become a lifelong successful hairdresser practicing her trade into her 70’s.
In 1978, Doreen left the city life with her marriage to Mel Bergen and moved to a cattle operation in Hays, Alberta. From there they then moved to the Elk Valley, B.C. to work the Elk Valley Ranch, where she is fondly remembered for her Big Horn Roping Club and the events that her and Mel hosted for their many friends. Following that, Doreen and Mel made their new home in Ferintosh, Alberta, where Doreen was very active in the community, having her own hairdressing shop (Dorrie’s Cut Hut) and running the Ferintosh campground. After Mel passed away, Doreen made the tough choice of leaving her friends and moved back to Lethbridge where she resided until her passing.
Due to COVID-19, a Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, June 5, 2020.
