It is with deep sadness that the family of JOAN CARTHEN (nee Robinson) announces her passing, with family at her side at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, November 29th, 2017 at the age of 84 years.
Joan was predeceased by her husband of forty-two years Walter Carthen, her parents Fletcher and Ruby Robinson, her sister and brother-in-law Roberta and Roy Ellis, her brother Don Robinson, and sister-in-law Betty Anne Robinson. She is survived by her children Brent Carthen of Castlegar B.C. and Jodi Carthen of Washington State USA, and by her grandchildren Blake and Darrel Horner, her brothers Garry Robinson and Darrel Robinson, and sisters-in-law Donna Robinson and Mary Anne Robinson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan was born in Lethbridge in 1933, growing up in various southern Alberta communities as the family moved between RCMP postings in Waterton, Magrath, and Taber. Joan attended Galt School of Nursing before moving to California where she worked as an emergency room registered nurse in Tulare while she and Walter raised their family. They returned to Lethbridge in 1980 where she shared her love of nursing as an instructor at Lethbridge College until retiring in the early 1990s. Joan spent her retirement years enjoying family and her love of gardening.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s name can be made to Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, 960-19 Street South, Lethbridge, AB., T1J 1W5.
At Joan’s request, a private family service will be held at a later date.
