STANLEY “STAN” FLOYDE COXSON passed away peacefully in the presence of his family in Lethbridge, Alberta on June 30, 2023 at the age of 90 years. Born on July 2, 1932, in Alix, Alberta, he was the son of Clyde and Jean Coxson. Stan’s birth held a special significance as it took place at a church camp where his parents were pastoring, marking the beginning of a life deeply rooted in faith and community.
Growing up in a busy household, Stan shared his childhood years with his siblings: Ivy (Don) Kerlee, Esther (Leonard) Taylor, Wesley (Betty) Coxson, and Elsie (Wendell) Carlson.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Jean Coxson; as well as his sisters, Ivy Kerlee and Esther Taylor; his brothers-in-law Don Kerlee and Wendell Carlson; and sister-in-law Betty Coxson. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Edith Pearson.
On May 29, 1964 Stan married Jeanne Hunt creating an instant family as parents to Darwyn, aged 6 and Lorraine, aged 4.
Stan was a dedicated father to his children: Darwyn (Deborah) Coxson, Lorraine Coxson (Jim Meyers), Bobbi (Ken) Dueck, and Perry. He took great pride in, and always delighted in the presence of, all his children, and especially his grandchildren which include David (Rachel) Dueck, Melissa (Kendrick) DeBoer, Christopher Coxson (Lori Johnson), Rowan Coxson, and Rebecca Coxson. He loved being a Grandpa and took time with each of his grandkids and always had adventures and projects to conquer. In his later years, he also adored his great-grandchildren, Olivia and Annelise DeBoer and Isaac Dueck. He cherished the moments he spent with them, sharing stories, cuddles, and laughter.
Throughout his life, Stan pursued various occupations and activities. His younger years were largely spent doing anything to make ends meet. Times were tough. He worked on ranches, farm crews, orchards, construction, and with heavy equipment. He was a member of the Lethbridge Fire Department and International Fire Fighters Association for 10 years. In 1964, he joined ranks with his father-in-law in Hunt Insurance Agencies Ltd. where he spent the balance of his working life as an insurance broker and in the Lethbridge business community.
Stan’s passion for community engagement extended beyond his career pursuits. He was proud of the volunteer work he did as an instructor for St. John Ambulance where he holds the prestigious rank of Commander of the Order of St John Ambulance- the Priory of Canada- which was awarded to him by the Governor General, along with a 50-year service award. His many years of dedication to Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization as treasurer and then chairman of the board gave him a place post-retirement to continue to build leadership and community.
He served as a board member in various capacities too numerous to mention, some of which included the Lethbridge Police Commission, Lethbridge Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Lethbridge Economic Development, and the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta. His contributions were instrumental in shaping the community and improving the lives of its residents. He took an active part in every faith community that he was a member of over the years, volunteering both his time and resources both with individuals and the organizations.
Throughout his life, Stan remained committed to his faith, finding solace and guidance in his relationship with God, which left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Up to the very time of his passing, he was actively mentoring several young people as well as many people in Martha’s House where he was residing. While his mobility had decreased , his sense of God given purpose never did.
Stan will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
