September 12, 1918 – February 3, 2016

Born near the front in 1917,  Anne Duzs {nee} Kormous. Daughter of  Istvan and Rosella Juhasz baptized her Anna on September 12, 1918 at Meszes Hungary. 

With the revolution coming her family migrated to southern Alberta by the spring of 1928.  By the time winter arrived the 9 year old Anna​’s remaining parent Rosella was renting rooms to keep a roof over the​m and would do so for many years. With the produce from the garden and seasonal work at the cannery in town they managed to get by until the opportunity to work as a riveter on the liberty ships being built at The Burrard docks in Vancouver gave Anne the chance to earn a man’s wage. 

​By the end of 1944 she had been promoted to steam pipe fitter and had enough for a down payment on a farm just below Temple Hill north of Raymond Alberta where Rosella still ​lived.​ By 1952 she had married Joe Duzs and taken in the​ youngest ​from her sister’s household, ​ Bernice whom she would raise as if she were her own daughter and continue with this mindset ​for ​Bernice’s son Barry whom she considered to be her grandson​,  stating as much in legal documents. 

Having cashed in her share of the farm and moved back into town Anne worked at the Raymond Home and cared for her mother daily until her passing. After retiring Anne moved to Lethbridge eventually building a home on the south side, acting as her own contractor. Where she continued to collect clothing and necessities for those who had remained in Meszes. Whom she remained close to,  having twice returned to the old country and village where her family had lived for nearly 1500 years.   Original ​Hungarians,  Guardians,  as declared by the Hungarian government in 2015,   the valley and its traditional villages,   National Treasures of Hungary.

Anne Duzs has been a resident of long term care at St Michael’s Care Facility in Lethbridge Alberta since 2006 and was herself a treasure with Co Guardians of her own.  Her name and love of gardening will live on at St Michael’s thanks to funds for the gardening as therapy program that’s made empty decks come alive for the residents &  staff to enjoy. A token of appreciation for her care providers and friends at St Michael’s which achieved her lifelong ambition of not owing any taxes during the last years of her life.

Anne’s own gardening abilities ​having crossed the line into an art form with a love of flowers made real​, of silk and wool​.  Today one of her quilted bedspreads hangs in the sacristy of the Sisters of St Martha’s Mother ​House and her poppies will forever bloom in the halls of St Michael’s in Lethbridge Alberta.

Having passed away on February 3, 2016 at the age of 98 her quilts and needle art will long be enjoyed by many great niece and nephews  Anne is survived by her loving niece Liz Coppick of Edmonton and grandson of the heart Barry Lee Ober of Vancouver B.C., EPOA and Co Guardian of Anne Duzs.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 3:00 P.M.
