1918 – 2017
It is with sorrow, but wonderful memories, that we mark the death of our dear mother, MONICA DELORES FETTIG, in Lethbridge on Sunday, May 7th, 2017. We celebrate the extraordinary ninety-nine year journey of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and matriarch.
Monica is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Howells (Al) of Taber, Shirley Jensen (Dennis) of Lethbridge, and Sheila (Terry) Roth of Coaldale, and her treasured grandchildren: Rhonda, Darren, Malcolm and Michelle; Craig and Lisa; and Tim, Erin and Courtney. A long fruitful life means Monica’s lineage is carried proudly forward by eighteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren.
Monica also leaves to mourn her brothers-in-law, Jack and John Fettig and her sisters-in-law, Elsie and Rosie Fettig and their families. As well, she leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews. Monica was predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Joseph Fettig; by her sisters, Cecilia, Kate, Caroline, Annie, Irene, Helen and her brother, George. Sadly, Monica was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Robert Howells, and her grandson, Kurt Jensen.
Monica Fauth was born in Faith, Alberta on February 5th, 1918, the youngest of eight siblings and grew up on the family farm learning to do chores, to ride horses, play sports and to try desperately to keep up with her beloved brother, George.
Monica met the love of her life, Joe Fettig, at one of the community dances in Faith or Hoping and they were married soon after on November 7, 1939. They settled down on the Fettig home place, south of Grassy Lake where they raised their three lovely daughters, worked tirelessly, and established a prosperous mixed farm. In 1975, they retired from farming and moved to Lethbridge, where they both continued to work, but also to carry on a very active social life of square dancing, camping with the family and frequent card parties with relatives and friends.
Monica’s greatest passion always was her family. Monica and Joe always found time to look after the grandkids who always came home saying how much ice cream and cake they’d eaten, and how much fun they’d had.
In spite of setbacks, and failing health, Monica remained fiercely independent and self-reliant, living in her own condo until age 97. The last two years have been difficult, painful and confining but Monica’s courage and good humor in the face of this adversity is inspiring to us all.
A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. with Teresa Grice officiating.
