Marion Kalicum (née Yanke) – A Life of Love and Legacy
Marion Kalicum, known lovingly as “Nanny” to all, born Marian Yanke on April 8, 1932, in Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2023, near Nanaimo, British Columbia. A remarkable woman whose life was a rich tapestry of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family, Marion leaves a legacy of strength and compassion. Survived by her daughters Loretta and Peggy, her six grandchildren Leslie, Kimberly, William, Derrick, Jeremy, and Michael, and great-grandchildren Claire, Eden, Ashton, Iris, and Hendrik. Predeceased by her husband Frederick, sons Ronald and Leroy, and her siblings, Marion’s spirit remains a guiding light.
Marion’s enduring love and commitment to her family were her greatest triumphs. She was instrumental in establishing Kalicum Drilling, the family business, by ensuring her home was a haven of warmth and generosity, always with a humorous reminder: “You need to eat!” Known for her elegant style and boundless energy, she relished in activities like curling, golf, yoga, group fitness, and lawn bowling.
Her grandchildren, who often found solace and guidance in her presence, remember her as the person who was always there for them, the heart of their family. She played an invaluable role in their upbringing, imparting wisdom, love, and the occasional extra serving of her famous dishes.
Marion’s grandchildren, along with her daughter Lorrie, invite you to join in celebrating Marion’s extraordinary life on Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in Nanaimo, BC. Please RSVP to rsvp@kalicumholdings.com for details.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Seniors First BC, a society dedicated to legal advocacy and support to older adults, would be a fitting tribute to Marion’s caring spirit. Marion’s life, marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to family, will continue to inspire and comfort all who knew her.
