MABEL MARIE MICHAELIS, of Lethbridge, and formerly of Burdett, beloved wife of the late Melven Michaelis, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Thursday, July 16th, 2026 at the age of 94 years.
Mabel is survived by her loving daughter Sue, and her favourite son-in-law, Gary Illingworth.
Besides her loving husband Melven, she was predeceased by her parents Leo and Mary Kambeitz, and father and mother-in-law William and Martha Michaelis.
Mabel Kambeitz was born on October 26, 1931 in Benson County, Silva, North Dakota, U.S.A. to Leo and Mary Kambeitz. Mabel came to Canada with her parents in 1933. She was raised and went to school in Foremost. After Mabel and Melven were married on October 25, 1950, they lived on the Michaelis farm near Milk River until 1953, when they moved south of Foremost. One year later, Mabel and Melven purchased their own farm, just south of Burdett. They also farmed Mabel’s grandfather’s homestead. They had a grain farm, pigs, and 1,000 laying hens, which kept them busy day and night. They built a two-room house when they came to Burdett. In 1966, they built a new home, and on October 30, 1966, Susan Elizabeth was born.
After Melven passed on September 26, 1996, Mabel continued to live on the farm until 1997, when she sold it and moved to Bow Island, where she lived until October 2017. Mabel loved to play bingo and playing cards, baking and thoroughly enjoyed travelling with Gary and Sue. She also enjoyed farming, fishing and ice fishing.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at 10:00 A.M.
Following the reception, Mabel will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Melven in the Bow Island Cemetery.
