WATCH: Canadian Pacific Holiday Train arrives in Lethbridge

Dec 10, 2017 | 8:56 PM

LETHBRIDGE – It was a bit late getting to Lethbridge, but when the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train backed across the High Level Bridge – pausing for a few moments – many remarked how beautiful it looked.

Dozens of vehicles, full of families, the curious, and many photographers, lined the parking lot of Brewery Gardens and the shoulder along 1 Avenue South. The train was scheduled to arrive behind the Save-On-Foods at 6:45 p.m., but was delayed in Coalhurst for a short period of time. It arrived around 7:15 and stayed until just before 8 p.m.

Alan Doyle and Beautiful Band played a half dozen song set, with one of the last as “Feed the World.” Those who had trouble getting into the Centre Village Mall parking lot, instead parked nearby and watched from the Stafford Bridge.

Train Engineer Jay Matheson will be retiring next year after working for CP for 32 years. He says he’s never seen crowds like the ones that showed up Sunday evening.

“I haven’t seen people like this. This has really exploded. This is just incredible. People are just into this holiday train big time.”

One family LNN spoke with even travelled from Calgary just to see the train cross the High Level Bridge.

The Train is scheduled to arrive in Fort Macleod at 9:15 a.m. Monday morning (Dec. 11), in Pincher Creek at 11:05 a.m., Coleman at 1:05 p.m., and in Medicine Hat at 5:00 p.m Dec. 17.
